Texas Rangers Top 10 Prospects, Part One

Martin_Perez_01_PT

The Rangers have had the top farm system in baseball the last few years, but due to the graduation of many of these players to the big league team and Jon Daniels making it rain prospects in Seattle, Florida, Washington, and San Francisco this Summer the system has thinned out some.

Matt McClearin is the Studio Host for The Dallas Stars Radio Network. He is the voice of the Stars pregame and co-host of the road post-game shows on Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket. I recently sat down with him to discuss both the present and the future of the Stars organization.

Bidding War Cliff Notes, Part Two

0304 Cliff Lee Fact Starter Closer

(Writer’s Note: This is the second article in a series about Cliff Lee’s free agency. The first article was about the Yankee advantages for Mr. Lee; this article is all about the Ranger advantages. Yes, the Ranger article is longer. Yes, I am totally biased. What are you going to do about it?)

From the moment I saw Cliff Lee of the Philadelphia Phillies effortlessly catch a ball behind his back in the 2009 World Series, he has been my favorite Major League pitcher.

Rangers’ Hamilton, Guerrero Win Silver Slugger Awards

Josh_Hamilton_01

Texas Rangers’ ALCS MVP Center-fielder Josh Hamilton and designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero were both chosen today as winners of Louisville Slugger’s Silver Slugger Awards.

Hamilton, who also won the award in 2008, had a career year in 2010.  Despite missing a significant amount of time in the last few weeks of the regular season with two fractured ribs, the Rangers’ All-Star outfielder won the batting title with a .359 batting average, belting 32 homeruns and 100 RBI’s.This marks Vladimir Guerrero’s eight Silver Slugger award. In 2010, the 35 year-old hit for .300 with 29 homers and 115 RBI’s from the DH position.

Congratulations to our Texas Rangers for an outstanding 2010 season, and to Josh Hamilton and Vladimir Guerrero for their individual accomplishments.

MLB Free Agency: Who Goes Where and Why, Part Three

Vladimir_Guerrero_01_PT

The hot stove is in full effect and speculation is running rampant on all the big name free agents. Everyone fully expects the Yankees to pull out the red carpet for Cliff Lee and the Angels know they need to revamp to be able to compete with the AL champion Rangers and upstart Oakland A’s, but what else can we look for in the coming weeks?

Op-Ed: The Rangers Need to Embrace their New Role as a Contender

Jon Daniels

It should be no surprise to anyone that seemingly every team in major league baseball has some interest in Cliff Lee. I mean, even the slow-pitch softball team I’m on is thinking about preparing an offer for the ace. The thing is, the Rangers (and their fans) can’t be intimidated by the mass of teams throwing their hat in the ring for the most coveted free agent of this offseason.

Bidding War Cliff Notes, Part One

Brian_Cashman_01

You’ve probably heard the news by now: somewhere in Arkansas,  Brian Cashman, general manager of the New York Yankees and most appropriately named person on the planet, is ready to talk numbers with ace Cliff Lee and his agent Derek Braunecker.

After hearing the annoying refrain of “Whatever! Lee’s gonna look great in pinstripes!” after a Texas Chainsaw Massacre of an ALCS, Ranger fans have been collectively dreading this day.

For Texas Rangers, 2-year Contract is a Wash

Ron_Washington_01_PT

That’s the way contract go. Last week, The Texas Rangers re-signed manager Ron Washington to a new two-year contract. It received little fanfare in the media, probably because it was a foregone conclusion that Washington would be back. After all, the Rangers have improved their win totals each of his four years as manager, winning 75, 79, 87, and 90 games respectively. Add that to this season’s remarkable playoff run, and Washington all but guaranteed his return.

Op-Ed: Gold Gloves, Sabermetrics and Eye-tests. (You Can’t Quantify Awesome.)

Elvis_Andrus_01_PT

The recipients of the Gold Glove Awards were announced today, and Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter was selected over the Texas Rangers’ All-Star Elvis Andrus as the infield winner in the American League. This makes for Jeter’s 5th Gold Glove in his fourteen years in the majors. This is a travesty.
